Personal Support Worker Career Fair - Barrie
Simcoe County is currently facing a critical shortage of trained Personal Support Workers
(PSWs), and the need will only grow as our population ages. With this in mind, the Simcoe Muskoka Workforce Development Board (www.smwdb.com) is offering a series of free Personal Support Worker Career Fairs throughout the County of Simcoe and District of Muskoka in September and October.
These events will be open to the public and will give interested residents a chance to speak to employers about current and future career opportunities. Educators will be on hand to talk about the types of training available. Employment service providers and academic upgrading agencies will also be on hand to help attendees prepare themselves for this career path.
Personal Support Workers perform a number of important tasks as part of an integrated health care team. They typically work in institutional settings such as hospitals, retirement homes or long-term care facilities. They can also provide services to clients in their homes. Whatever or wherever they work, PSW’s are caring and compassionate health care professionals who make a difference in peoples’ lives. Personal Support Worker training is also an excellent first step in the health care career ladder. Many graduates go on to PSW specialization or nursing.
Sasha is a PSW student who will be graduating soon and is currently doing a work placement in Barrie.
For her, “I’m just one real part of the team. It’s my hands that are helping become the hands that really do what someone is no longer able to do on their own. I wake up in the morning knowing that I might be the first smile somebody sees that day. I might be the only smile somebody sees that day, and I just love to be a part of peoples’ lives.”
Susan Laycock, Executive Director of the SMWDB explained; “In consultation with many of our community partners, it became abundantly clear that we could assist them in connecting with job-seekers who want to explore this challenging and rewarding career. Employers everywhere in Simcoe and Muskoka are looking for qualified and dedicated personal support workers and we wanted to make this a priority.”
